Paris: President of France Emmanuel Macron, Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz, Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni, and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Keir Starmer on Monday issued a joint statement strongly welcoming the declaration of an agreement on the US-Iran memorandum of understanding.
According to Qatar News Agency, the leaders considered the accord a diplomatic breakthrough and an opportunity to restore regional stability and the global economy. They congratulated the United States, Iran, the State of Qatar, Pakistan, and other mediators for what they dubbed a "diplomatic breakthrough."
In addition, the leaders underscored the current moment as an opportunity to restore regional stability and the global economy, stressing the necessity of completing the detailed negotiations and promptly implementing the deal.
Reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring unconditional and unrestricted freedom of navigation are necessary conditions, the leaders stressed, reemphasizing their nations' commitment to taking their role in achieving that objective based on their constitutional requirements, through a purely independent and defensive mission to monitor commercial navigation and implement demining operations.
As such, the leaders affirmed their readiness to lift the relevant sanctions on Iran, provided Iran takes forthright and verifiable steps on the nuclear program. They also underlined the importance of a ceasefire in Lebanon and full support for its stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
On Sunday, President Donald Trump announced in a post on Truth Social a peace agreement with Iran.
