New york: The State of Qatar has underscored that it is thoroughly committed to the United Nations Charter and called for ending the persistent breaches of this Charter. Qatar highlighted its unwavering dedication to continue its efforts, along with regional and international partnerships, to reinforce the UN-centric, Charter-based international order.
According to Qatar News Agency, this announcement was made in a statement by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, during the High-level Open Debate: Upholding the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-Centred International System, held at the UN headquarters in New York. Sheikha Alya emphasized that the UN Charter, established post-World War II, is not just a legal document but a moral treaty aimed at preventing wars.
Sheikha Alya noted the unprecedented challenges faced by the Charter-based international order, citing attacks on national sovereignty and territorial integrity. These actions undermine the UN's credibility and necessitate a credible political will to reinforce commitment to the Charter and strengthen plurality through the United Nations.
Her Excellency called for a collective international response to current global challenges, aligning with the purposes and founding objectives of the Charter. She stressed the importance of thoroughly implementing the Charter's principles and avoiding selective interpretation of its provisions.
Moreover, Sheikha Alya emphasized the principle of sovereign equality among nations and the prohibition of force or its threat, particularly in the context of flagrant violations of international law and humanitarian law. Qatar recognizes the UN as the pivotal framework of the international order and advocates for accelerating an overhaul of the UN system to create a more inclusive and effective international order for the twenty-first century. This includes strengthening the UN financially, in human resources, and institutionally.
Investing in conflict prevention and addressing root causes through mediation and preventive diplomatic dialogue, in line with the Charter's objectives and relevant UN resolutions, was highlighted as crucial. Qatar prides itself on its role in mediation and preventive diplomacy as core aspects of its foreign policy.
Sheikha Alya reiterated Qatar's gratitude for the ongoing Pakistan-led mediation between the United States and Iran, and confirmed Qatar's full support for these efforts, which aim to enhance peace and stability in the region.
