Qatar Foundation Hosts Second Conference on Arab-Iberian Musical Traditions in Spain

Madrid:Doha Qatar Foundation, in collaboration with the Reina Sofía School of Music, has organized the second Conference of the Chair of Arab Studies in Madrid, Spain. The event brought together a diverse group of academics, musicians, and experts from around the globe to delve into the historical connections between Arab and Iberian musical traditions and their impact on contemporary artistic creativity.

According to Qatar News Agency, this three-day conference was held under the theme 'Shared Histories, Living Traditions Arab–Iberian Musical Encounters from Historical Sources to Contemporary Creation.' It commenced with a performance by the Doha Ensemble for Classical Maqam and focused on three centuries of musical heritage related to Segah. The sessions drew from manuscript research and early sound recordings, transitioning from historical repertoire to contemporary works.

The conference also included academic presentations and discussions on various topics, such as medieval Iberian repertoires, al-Andalus, Cantigas de Santa María, and the maritime connections between the Arab world and the Iberian Peninsula. These sessions highlighted the role of these regions in the exchange of knowledge and cultural and musical influences over the centuries.

Furthermore, educators from Qatar Music Academy, part of QF's Pre-University Education, conducted interactive workshops on traditional instruments like the oud, nay, and qanun. These workshops provided participants with an opportunity to learn about the characteristics of these instruments, explore playing techniques, and experience the rich heritage of Arab music firsthand.
