Doha:With less than a year remaining for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027, Suhail has been officially announced as the mascot for the prestigious men's competition in Doha, Qatar.
According to Qatar News Agency, Suhail is inspired by the prominent star known as Canopus in Western culture, which has historically guided the people of the Gulf region. This celestial body has played a significant role for sailors, nomads, and pearl divers, serving as a beacon through deserts and seas, and laying the groundwork for the nations in the region. Its unveiling in Doha is timely, as the star is traditionally associated with the transition to cooler weather, and it is expected to shine brightly during the World Cup.
Suhail, crafted from meteorite origins, embodies the essence of both sky and earth, with a body of crystalline facets that capture the light and energy from the sun. As the official mascot, Suhail aims to inspire both players and fans, promising magical moments throughout the tournament.
Abdulla Ali Al Mawlawi, Executive Director of Communications and Guest Relations at the Local Organizing Committee, emphasized the significance of Suhail's unveiling. He noted that the mascot not only reflects Qatar's cultural identity but also celebrates the region's rich heritage. Al Mawlawi expressed hopes that Suhail will enhance fan engagement and promote the tournament, while also encouraging the growth of basketball in Qatar and the surrounding region.
