Over 1.26 Million Syrians Voluntarily Return to Homeland Amid Facilitated Measures

Damascus: Over 1.26 million Syrians have voluntarily returned to Syria through border crossings, as confirmed by the Syrian General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs. The authority reports that measures and facilities for receiving these returnees are ongoing.

According to Qatar News Agency, Director of Public Relations at the Authority, Mazen Alloush, stated that between December 2024 and the end of May 2025, a total of 1,268,347 citizens returned through border crossings. The statistics show that 736,902 of these returnees came from Turkiye, 367,444 from Lebanon, 137,239 from Jordan, and 23,606 from Iraq.

In the first five months of 2026, 273,412 citizens made their way back to Syria. Of these individuals, 149,185 returned from Lebanon, 105,767 from Turkiye, 13,599 from Jordan, and 1,705 from Iraq. This trend highlights the sustained pattern of voluntary return to the country.

Alloush emphasized that the General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs continues to offer a comprehensive package of facilities to ease the return process. These include simplifying procedures, expediting transaction processing, providing flexible travel lanes, and exempting personal and household belongings from fees as per existing laws and regulations.

He pointed out that these efforts aim to reduce the burdens on returning families and support their resettlement within Syria. The Authority is also focused on enhancing services for travelers and improving operational efficiency at the border crossings.

The Director of Public Relations further noted that the ongoing rise in returnees indicates growing confidence in the border procedures and services, as well as successful efforts to ensure a safe and efficient passage for citizens wishing to return. The steady influx of returning Syrians reflects a burgeoning desire among citizens to resettle in their homeland.
